What are Pearls?

Posted by: Susan Wilson - Natural Organic Makeup  :  Category: organic cosmetics

Pearls are tiny wonders of nature. The only gem created by a living organism, pearl is the most magical and feminine of all gems. They have always been considered the most romantic jewelry gifts. The variety of colors, shapes, sizes and origin makes pearls most fascinating. Whatever your taste or budget, there is sure to be cultured pearl jewelry that will thrill you. Chosen carefully and treated with care, pearls will be a treasure for a lifetime.

A pearl is a hard, lustrous rounded concretion produced by certain animals, primarily mollusks such as oysters.

A pearl is formed when a foreign material, usually a sharp object such as a fragment of rock, a sand grain or parasite enters the oyster or clam and cannot be expelled. This irritates the mollusk and to reduce irritation, the mollusk coats the intruder with the same secretion it uses for shell-building, i.e. nacre. This results in coating the foreign material with layer upon layer of shell material. In this way a pearl is formed.

Looking at the chemistry of the pearls so formed inside the shell of certain bivalve mollusks, we find layers of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the form of the minerals aragonite or calcite (both crystalline forms of calcium carbonate) held together by an organic horn-like compound called conchiolin. This combination of calcium carbonate and conchiolin is called nacre, or as we more commonly know it, mother-of-pearl. The unique luster of pearls is a result of the reflection and refraction of light from its translucent layers and is finer in proportion as the layers become thinner and more numerous. The iridescence that some pearls display is caused by the overlapping of successive layers, which breaks up the light falling on the surface.

Pearls are the most valued among all the gemstones because of their delicate translucence and luster. White is the most commonly found color, though pearls are also found in delicate shades of pink, black, cream, gray , blue, yellow, lavender, green and mauve. Black pearls can be fond in the Gulf of Mexico and in waters off some islands in the Pacific Ocean. The Persian Gulf and Sri Lanka are well known for exquisite cream colored pearls called Orientals. Natural seawater pearls are also found in the waters off Celebes in Indonesia, the Gulf of California and the Pacific Coast of Mexico. The Mississippi river and forest streams of Bavaria also produce pearls.

Pearls are formed at times on the inside of the shells of the mollusk. These are usually irregular in shape and have little commercial value. However, those formed within the tissue of the mollusk are either spherical or pear-shaped, and are highly valued for use as jewelry. Besides being used in jewelry pearls are also crushed and used in cosmetics or paint. Pearl is highly valued as a gemstone and is therefore cultivated or harvested for jewelry. The pearl is also the birthstone of June.

Cultivating Beauty: Rose Gardening

Posted by: Susan Wilson - Natural Organic Makeup  :  Category: organic beauty

Roses have received a reputation of requiring high maintenance and being difficult to grow. It is a shame because they are one of the most beautiful and distinctive flowers. But, with a little knowledge how and tender love and care, raising roses can createa fragrant and beautiful mainstay to your gardens. As a result of the efforts of many hortaculturists, modern hybrids and hardy varieties make rose gardening simpler and more rewarding than ever.

One can find roses in colors from white to almost black, and every shade in between. Along with the vast variety of colors, rose plants can be found with a different growing habits and degrees of hardiness. One can find roses that vary from a low growing shrub to elegant climbings. One of the most enjoyable experiences of rose gardening is being able to choose the varietie and color to plant. One type of rose that is becoming very popular is the antique. These can be found at many rose emporiums and have been nurtured from cuttings taken from old cemetaries.

Planting

To create a successful rose garden, one must choose the a good location for planting. Roses like full sun with well-drained soil to thrive. the prefered condition is rich soil containing plenty of organic matter. But roses are very hardy and can tolerate most soil types. To make sure your rose plants are placed in the ground as soon as possible, prepare your rose bed before purchasing your plants.

You have two options when you purchase your rose plants: bare root and potted. The least expensive of the two are bare root roses because they are packaged and shipped in their dormant state. But, if you want a quick start to your rose garden, you will probably want to purchase potted roses. As they take root and bloom more quickly, potted roses are a good choice for beginning rose gardeners.

After the bed has been prepared and the plants purchased, it is time to begin planting. To make sure you rose has the best chance of quality growth, the hole must be prepared properly. It should be large enough to contain the entire root system of the rose. This means that is should be deep enough to cover the root ball to the crown.

Pruning and Care

To maintain the health of your plant, rose gardening involves some ongoing upkeep. To encourage growth and maintain health, roses should be pruned in both spring and fall. If done properly, pruning will cut out any dead or weak branches and remove twiggy, non-productive growth.

If you live in an area of cold or snowy winters, preparing your rose bushes for winter is an important part of rose gardening. To protect your rose bushs from winter chills, simply mound mulch around the base of each rose bush and secure it in place with a collar or cage.

Often known as the hobby of royalty, rose gardening has a long, rich history. It is being enjoyed by an increasing number of modern gardners because of the beauty and hardiness of the plants. To enjoy this beautiful hobby only a little knowledge, a patch of garden space and a love for beauty.

Create Luxurious Bath And Body Products With Natural Fragrance Oils

Posted by: Susan Wilson - Natural Organic Makeup  :  Category: natural skincare

I don’t know about you, but I’m as hooked on bath and body products as I’m going to get! I can’t pass the aisle at Wal-Mart without taking a look. Trips to the mall have become half hour events in the Bath and Body store. Gift buying for female friends and family is now a much anticipated outing because I can wander over to the bubble bath and lotion and pick up a little something extra for myself while I’m buying their present!

Now that there are private label bath and body product businesses online, the adventure never ends. I have found some of the most wonderful products from small, online specialty shops that can’t be found in stores or malls. Many of these darling businesses, such as ‘Marlo Quinn’ and others like it, hand-make and design their own soaps, lotions, bubble baths and other personal care products, most using all-natural, or mostly natural ingredients.

Ever wonder if you could make some of your own bath and body products at home? I know, most of you will audibly laugh at the idea of even having the time to take a bubble bath, much less actually making something you’d want to put in your bath water and sit in! Ok, I get it. You’re busy. But just imagine that you have a few minutes one weekend and get the ingredients together to make your own deliciously scented, natural spa products. Wouldn’t that leave you with a warm sense of accomplishment and ultimately a warm, frothy bubble bath or scrubby facial mask?

Let’s assume you go with option number two, and make a date with yourself to create something wonderful. Hey, you could even go as far as getting together some like-minded (bath product enthusiasts) friends, chill some good wine and make a party out of it! Everyone can take home their creations and report back later as to the overall effect and results. I can make a party out of just about anything these days.

So, here is an easy and yummy smelling home-made soap recipe to get you started and in the mood for more. You’ll want to gather your ingredients a few days in advance. Have fun!

‘A’ is for Apple Soap

4oz. clear, unscented glycerine soap

1 Tablespoon liquid soap

1 teaspoon liquid glycerine

1/2 teaspoon Apple Fragrance Oil

2 drops Red Food Color

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Melt soap in small pan over low heat. Add Liquid soap and glycerine and stir well gently Add fragrance, color and cinnamon. Stir and let stand a couple minutes, until you see it start to thicken and the cinnamon is mixed evenly. Pour into molds such as muffin tins or character candy or soap molds. Allow to set completely and store in zip lock storage bags.

When the soaps are all set, they make great little gifts for special occasions. How cute would they be as a ‘Teacher Gift’ at Christmas time, especially if you use ‘apple’ molds. There are more home-made recipes and ideas at ‘Natural You Mineral Makeup and Skincare.com’.

Natural Mineral Makeup: Glow Of Youth At The Tip Of A Brush

Posted by: Susan Wilson - Natural Organic Makeup  :  Category: natural cosmetics

Fine lines got you down? Stop that scalpel! You don’t need a face-lift, a fine natural makeup brush and natural mineral makeup will fix your wrinkles, cover your blemishes, and enhance your natural beauty.

Heavy oily makeup makes skin hang and sag as you forcefully blend it, pulling and pushing on tender delicate skin. You have a better option. Set your skin free!

Natural cosmetics offer mineral foundation powders applied with the delicate wisp of a brush. Color touches the skin like a glow of light, allowing the sheer luxury of translucent powder to accent your natural complexion, clearing tiny lines and eliminating blemishes.

You can ignite the glow within; using refined mineral foundation powder created from finely milled organic pigments found in necessary mineral nutrients. Toxic chemicals peel tender layers of delicate skin tissue as you rub and massage them into your skin to even out skin tones and blend colors. Natural cosmetic powders glide on with the feather light touch of a brush imparting protection from sun-damage with high SPF ratings and natural protection from the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays.

Natural mineral makeup offers excellent coverage without heavy oils that cause blemishes and skin irritation. Mineral foundation powder stays in place without streaking and running, like heavy liquid make-ups. Most makeup companies produce their own lines of mineral powder cosmetics including foundation, eye shadow, blush, concealers, and eyeliners.

Because of the small amount required for each use, you’ll want to find the best natural mineral makeup available. One container of powder lasts approximately a year with every day use. Natural cosmetics do not need to be replaced until they are used up, unlike regular oil based liquid makeups.

To apply natural cosmetics using a fluffy brush, you collect a bit of the translucent powder on the end of the brush, tap lightly and gently glide the brush across your cheeks, eyelids, forehead and chin. Gracefully blend the powder across all areas of your face with the large brush. Fine lines will disappear and blemishes fade to supple silky smooth skin.

As springtime, the glow of good health and youth spring forth with the use of natural cosmetics. Serene beauty and youth appear quickly because the translucent powder imparts a subtle glow as it gently fills the tiny lines and corrects imperfections. Your skin becomes smooth and silky when you use natural cosmetics, allowing the normal elasticity of your skin to conform to your facial structure.

With the flowing precision the softly bristled brush enhances contours of your skin refreshing your youthful exuberance and natural beauty. Natural cosmetics simplify the process of putting on make up every morning by taking the oils and liquid out of your routine.

If you haven’t tried the newest cosmetic creation, I strongly recommend you do so at your earliest convenience. You will be pleasantly rewarded with a youthful and healthy appearance and a revitalized morning routine. Your budget might even say thanks for the extra relief!
